The mild winter has meant that kitten season started a lot earlier this year. The huge volume of kittens being surrendered, coupled with an increase in people giving up their adult pets has created an unprecedented number of cats ending up at kill shelters. We are being contacted by every local shelter as well as private individuals asking us to take cats. Our foster homes are already completely packed and our intake is closed until spaces open. Currently all intake for owner surrenders is on hold until September, but we are always willing to post cats who are up to date on shots and medical to our website listings for those who may need to re-home their cat.
Before you call Fancy Cats about surrendering your cat please try the following:
Wait until after kitten season. Consider keeping your pet for the summer until the number of cats and kittens entering shelters and rescues slows down and there is less competition. In the meantime, we're happy to post photos and a biography of your cat to our website for additional exposure until we are able to schedule your cat for intake.
Ask your friends and family. Consider finding homes for cats or kittens through alternative reputable means, such as through friends, family, neighbors or coworkers.
Not every stray cat is lost. If you see a stray cat, leave it in place so that it can potentially find its way home. Check with your local shelters to see if his/her owner is searching for their cat. (Fancy Cats cannot accept strays who have not been reported to the shelter and waited a period of 10 days for their owners to claim them.) Bringing a lost cat to a shelter does not necessarily guarantee a reunion with their family. In fact, if the cat is not claimed within the standard hold period, chances are that it will be euthanized.
Mom and babies outside? Often when people see a mother cat run off from her kittens, they will be tempted to bring the young kittens to a rescue group. Female cats will usually return to their litter and these kittens have a better chance of survival if raised by their mother. We recommend monitoring the situation by leaving kittens and keeping an eye out for mom to return. It you want to help the kittens and mom, please contact us about fostering the litter and we'll help you get started!
Spay or neuter all tame cats you currently own. If you see a stray cat in your neighborhood, considering getting that one fixed too! There are many low cost spay/neuter options. For every cat that you fix, you end the potential suffering of thousands of cats and kittens who end up at kill shelters.
My cat had kittens! If you have a cat who is pregnant or had kittens, please keep the mother and babies until the kittens are 8 to 10 weeks of age. Staying with mom and siblings will help the kittens get a healthy start to life, and will result in more socialized kittens, who are easier to adopt. We can help place the kittens once they are old enough to be separated. However, we will only help place kittens once we are guaranteed that you have made plans to fix the mother so she won't have any more unwanted kittens! We can suggest low cost spay options in your area.
September Special Adoption Event
During this special promotion, adoption fees will be significantly reduced! Adopt a single cat for only $60, or provide a forever home for a bonded pair for $100.
Periodontal Disease (gum disease) affects the tissues and structures supporting the teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease can cause oral pain, dysfunction, tooth loss and systemic complications. 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS).
Why are we coming to a new store and city? For you- why else?

URGENT Foster & Permament Homes Needed for Cats Surviving FIRE
As many of you have seen and read, two members of Fancy Cats' family of volunteers suffered a tragic loss on Saturday, November 28th, when their home caught fire.
Kristen Turnstall and Mark Emlet lost their own pets and many foster kitties to the overwhelming smoke. Please keep them in your thoughts (and prayers, if you are so inclined) while they struggle to deal with this devastating, unimaginable loss of life.
We are posting updates as they are available on our Facebook page.
15 cats survived the fire.
Please consider donating funds to help Fancy Cats cope with vet bills.
We so enjoyed meeting Hello Kitty and talking with so many people about Fancy Cats. We met lots of wonderful adopters who shared stories of their Fancy Cats and quite a few future Fancy Cats adotpers too!
Thanks to all for coming out and sharing a wonderful day with us!
