Greetings, Friends of Fancy Cats! And Happy Fall to Everyone!
Thanks to everyone who came to support our Wine & Cheese party earlier this month. We heard a lot of good things from attendees, but if you haven't done so yet, we'd love to have your feed back. Send us an email and let us know your thoughts. Ticket sales, wine purchases and silent auction returns garnered more than $1000. This money will go a long way in helping us continue to care for cats while we struggle to meet last year's adoption results. A special thanks goes out to Henry and Julie Spall for opening their home to us, and to Dewey Animals for sponsoring the party.
Thanks also to everyone who has continued to support us through donations of time and money. We appreciate all of you more than you could possibly know. Each time we look into the eyes of a cat that we rescue, we think of you. CFC Campaings are kicking off. Don't forget to choose Fancy Cats as the recipient for your consolidated federal campaign donations. Our United Way/CFC Agency Number is 98772. It's also on the header of this email as well as on our website in case you need to find it later!
UPCOMING EVENT:
Have you ever wondered what would happen to your pets if you were not around? Traditionally pets have passed as tangible personal property under a person's will. Many times this has led to pets being surrendered to a shelter or rescue group and heirs keeping the money which would have been designated for the pets. Virginia has passed a statute which authorizes money to be set aside in trust for your pets' benefit. It also allows you to choose a guardian for your pet.
We will be hosting an educational seminar entitled "Estate Planning and Your Pets" on Saturday, November 8 at 2:00 pm at the Fairfax County Government Center. We invite you to join attorney Peter King, a Partner of HAUSWIESNER KING LLP, to learn more about the specifics of this statute and how to incorporate this trust into your estate plan. Feel free to bring your other estate planning questions. There will be plenty of time for discussion after Peter's short presentation. Please RSVP here to let us know if you'll be attending.
FEATURED KITTY:
August's Featured Kitty, Jeeves, was adopted! Queenie is the consummate cuddler! She is very easy going and one of Fancy Cats Rescue Team's favorites. We hope that someone will recognize what a special cat she is. Black cats tend to get overlooked but each is so unique, so special! Come fall in love with this beautiful girl! She is tired of cage life and eager to find a loving home to call her own. She'd be fine as your one-and-only but also would be okay with another gentle cat-loving cat. She likes attention, adores being brushed, gives kitty kisses, and has perfect kitty box manners. She is a big girl - about 18 lbs.! Queen is just a great cat who has been overlooked because of her size and color. We also have a bunch of other great, older kitties like Queen who don't do well at adoption fairs. If you are interested in meeting Queen, or any of those other wonderful adults, please email us to set up an appointment
HAPPY TAILS:
"Roxy and Penny (formerly Suzie and Shirley) are doing great, adapting well to the house, and to the older cat that I adopted at the same time (they are all nose touching now). Both Roxy and Penny are, well, kittens. They explore everywhere ... and I mean everywhere. It amazes me how far these two little cats can jump. They LOVE catnip and all the toys I previously bought for my other cat, who was too old and sick to play with them. The older cat and I just look at each other whenever we hear a crash somewhere in the house. They are adorable, loving, and make me laugh all the time. Their foster mom did a great job."

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:
Teri Guerette was new to the area, having just moved here from San Diego 6 years ago. She didn't have a cat, and since she moved around so much, wasn't ready for a pet of her own, so she looked up cat rescues on Volunteer Match and found Fancy Cats needed help at the PetsMart in Fair Lakes. She started with a cleaning shift on Tuesday nights, then helping as an assistant at adoption fairs on Sundays, where she showed cats to prospective adopters. After a few months, she was trained as an adoption coordinator, approving application on her own. Teri quickly came to know a lot of the volunteers, and was asked to take over as Volunteer Coordinator for the group. She then was scheduling cleaners and adoption fairs and, before she knew it, was recruiting and training new volunteers too. Teri was asked to join the Board of Directors and served on it for two years, as Vice President during the 2nd year. She took on special events planning, increasing our presence at the National Capital Cat Show and signing up for CFC fairs. She now manages the volunteers at Fancy Cats' 4th location in Springfield. Thanks for everything, Teri!
