NEWS:
Santa Paws Pet Photo Extravaganza - Recap
Thanks to everyone who came out to support Fancy Cats at our Santa Paws photo shoots! We met some great new volunteers and some adorable pets. Check out the story on our home page.

JUST A REMINDER:
We Collect Coke Rewards Points
Fancy Cats collects Coke Rewards points to trade in for items that we can use for auctions or raffles. Please save your bottle caps, cardboard case box ends and plastic case sides with the rewards codes and send them to us. You can email them to us, mail them to the PO Box below, or bring them to one of the Petsmart stores where we hold adoptions.

FEATURED KITTY:
Emmy!
EmmyEmmy is very polite; she only speaks when spoken to and will never get in your way, but she is always sure to be around if you need her. Emmy loves belly rubs, and will roll around the floor hoping for a good belly scratch. She has just learned how to play and is absolutely loving it! But don't worry! Emmy also enjoys sitting next to the window and catnapping all day long. She is a shy cat but is learning all of the great things a loving home can offer and she has really started to come out of my shell. Emmy doesn't mind dogs as long as they understand her low-key nature. She would really like a quiet home where she can feel free to be herself. Are you the right person of Emmy?

We have a bunch of other great kitties who do not do well at adoption fairs. If you are interested in meeting one of our featured kitties, or any of those other wonderful adults, please email us to set up an appointment.

ASK AGGY!
A Fancy Cats alumna answers your kitty's questions.
Dear Aggy,
My friends, Snookie, Meatball and Cookie, and I all love fish! We go crazy when we hear our owner open a tuna can! But, alas, she only gives us this tasty, savory food every once in a while. Why can't we have it all the time?!?
Anxiously awaiting your answer,
Fishbreath

Dear Fishbreath,
I, too, am an avid lover of this aromatic food - and in addition, my mom has a bunch of these tasty morsels swimming in an aquarium right at eye height. But, alas, I am only offered a fishy meal or two once in a while also. Here's why: an exclusive diet of canned tuna and other processed cat fish food is known to cause several different dietary diseases because it is deficient in several of the vitamins required for a feline diet. The most common disease is called Yellow Fat Disease (steatitis), caused by lack of Vitamin E. Taurine is essential in a cat's diet and fish has insuffcient amounts. Vitamin A, most B vitamins, Thiamin, Ribofavin, and other essential minerals and vitamins are not provided in suffcient amounts in most types of canned fish. This includes both human brand and cat food brand canned fish. Also, canned fish - especially the human varieties - contain a lot of sodium, much more than we kitties need.

"How about fresh fish?" I hear you asking. This form of fish is a little better but still seems deficient in some of the trace minerals needed for our good health. The safest bet is to limit our fish consumption to an occasional meal or two. Some kitties have been known to become tuna junkies and will refuse all other types of food. Your owner is trying to prevent this from happening, and they are right to do so.

Some of the high grade cat foods offer fish flavors that are fortified, providing a more adequate and complete diet for cats. These foods can be offered a little more frequently, but my advice is to also eat other flavors as well unless otherwise specified by your vet. Some foods can be almost medicinal. In fact, the lamb flavored canned foods are also easy on the stomach and intestines.

So Fishbreath, it's okay to have stinky breath occasionally; but if you want to have fish all the time, get an aquarium and dream on! At least you'll be around a long time to bat at those fish behind the glass!

Helpful Hint: Reserve canned tuna and similar fish for special occasions or when issues arise. For instance, if kitty runs out the door, put an opened can of tuna by the front stoop or sprinkle some along the sidewalk and kitty will more than likely return quickly (in fact, he might bring some friends with him). When you bring a new kitty into the home and the first thing they do is hide under the bed, lure them out slowly with some tuna. Reinforce good behavior with a bite of tuna; just don't overdo it.

Purrs to you,
Aggy

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:
We need your help!
Are you an organizer and a people-person? We are in need of someone to handle the scheduling of cleaning volunteers for the adoption center and adoption event volunteers at the Fair Lakes Petsmart. You can do this job from the comfort of your own computer! You will have the support of the current Adoption Center Manager to get you started. The job mainly entails emailing or phoning volunteers to fill any open slots and adding new volunteers to the schedule. Please contact Danielle for more information about this or any other volunteer jobs listed on the Volunteer page of our website.
